Each
year between the months of May and
October Farnham becomes awash with
colour as the flower filled hanging
baskets and troughs go out around
the town.
This year, after 5
years break, Farnham Town Centre
will be entered in the South East
in Bloom competition.
Communities that get involved in
South East in Bloom see benefits
such as:
- Brighter, cleaner and greener
local areas
- Increased civic pride as people
engage with their local surrounding
and get involved with planning
and management of the local environment
- A boost to the local economy
through increased tourism and
enabling shops to stay open instead
of closing due to lack of customers
- Regeneration of run-down, neglected
or disadvantaged areas
- Co-operation between community
groups for the benefit of all
residents
A way to get to know the people
in your community and have some
fun
There are several categories that
Farnham could enter, but this year
Farnham Town Council has decided
to enter Farnham into the Town Centre
category with the aim of entering
the full competion in 2010 which
will include all the villages.
The emphasis will be on the town
centre for one contiguous mile with
approx 200+ baskets and 100+ troughs
filling Farnham with flowers. The
displays go out from the end of
May 2008. However, Farnham in Bloom
consists of more than just hanging
baskets and troughs. It also includes
planting around the Gostrey Meadow
War Memorial, Lion and Lamb yard
flower bed, and the front of the
Council offices amongst other areas.
Each street within the town centre
will have its own colour theme.
The judges of South East in Bloom
will not only be looking at our
floral displays as the quality and
design of the displays only accounts
for 30% of the marks. They will
also mark:
- Permanent landscaping such as
the quality of shrubs, trees,
borders and grasses etc - accounts
for 25% of marks
- Conservation and Recycling
- accounts for 15% of marks
- Local Environmental Quality
- looks at cleanliness of Farnham,
litter, dog fouling, fly posting,
weeds, condition of street furniture
etc - accounts for 20% of marks
- Public Awareness - communication
of information to residents -
accounts for 10% of marks
So, in order to help keep Farnham
an attractive place in which to
live and work please do not drop
litter, stub out cigarette ends
and leave them on the pavement,
fly post or drop chewing gum - use
the bins provided around the town.
